Tired of the Internet?

Do you ever get tired of the internet? I love the internet, you can chat with friends, research new and interesting topics, email, shop, download stuff, etc. The problem is that sometimes the internet gets dull and dry like a 1,000 page novel that never ends and you set there wondering when the plot will get better or just come to an end. I get on my computer at home, after work, hoping to escape from a reality if only for a bit. I rarely send instant messages to my friends troubling them with my problems. I enjoy chatting with them about funny things… and if they need a ‘listening ear’ for their problems, I am always here. It all comes down to me wanting to get away… when I find myself getting annoyed by people and things online, then I know it is time to pull away. I have enough annoyance offline, so oft times I wonder why go through anything remotely similar online? With a slight click of a button I am offline. It is that is easy to get away from the internet but then again… it is not.

What keeps me coming back to the internet even when I am in that fed up mood? There are a few people that I enjoy talking to on the internet (and a couple on the phone) generally no matter what is going on. I should hope that they know who they are. Even when I do not feel like talking, an instant message and/or email from these select few people does not irritate me. They somehow always manage to put a smile on my face; lifting me up when I am down and maybe even get a few laughs out of me.

There are rare occasions when I want to be in solitude. I sit in front of my computer but I do not sign on AIM or hit up my regular forums. Still, something draws me to my computer (in addition to checking news)… which is my website. I have had a site since 1996… thank goodness the layout is not around still (the URL is still up though LOL). It was a piece of crap put together on Angelfire, the summer before I was a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis (by the way, WU just celebrated their 150th anniversary). I threw together some HTML and made my own site… this is what was an amazing concept to me, seven years ago. The fact that I could create something (free!) about myself and put it up on the world wide web for everyone to see. The irony behind all of this is that I may be one of the most shy females you may ever meet.

Early on, my website was composed of a bunch of links, things about myself (hobbies and such) and some pictures. I did not begin to share journal like thoughts until 2000 when I bought my first domain. I am not telling you what my first domain was, I hate that I picked that instead of missnexus.com. At the time, a few friends discouraged me from purchasing missnexus.com because it sounded (to them) too girly and only girls would visit! I should have listened to my own instincts (as I do so often these days). Anyway… this was the time when my site became my outlet. My personal website is a never ending project to me. I am not deeply into design for my site because I have always liked to keep it simple and somewhat elegant. I think the style matches my personality (forget the fact that if you ask my friends… they will say there is nothing simple about me lol). There is always something that I can do to my website. Add a new script, a new guestbook, new pictures, new layout… the list goes on and on. I enjoy sharing my thoughts with friends, family and random visitors. Even when I am not putting a new entry on the site daily, you will find me doing something to my website.

I have a question for my friends and random visitors to my site: If you have a personal website, what made you start your own website and what keeps you motivated to maintain it? Also, do you ever get tired of the internet… like you need a vacation from it? What keeps you coming back? I am very interested in knowing how others feel, so feel free to drop your comments!
