The Cookoff
Saturday, JT almost forgot that he had a chili cook off to participate in at work. Early that morning he rushed over to Schnucks and Shop N Save to get the ingredients he needed… ground beef, green onions, kidney beans, green peppers, chilli peppers and the secret ingredient… habanero peppers. Yes, habenero peppers are known as one of the four hottest peppers in the world and some identify them as the hottest. As soon as he lifted the top of the jar, my nose was on fire. I ran out of the kitchen and quickly went back to bed, hiding under the covers.
The chili preparation time took JT about an hour and a half total. JT set aside a special batch of chili for me and his mom because we refuse to eat chili with beans. Yuck yuck yuck, you cannot make me eat chili with beans!! And do not try to tell me it is not chili if it does not have beans. I have had enough debates about this to last me a lifetime. Anyway, I did not want to sample a taste of the sauce alone, because frankly I was scared lol… after my special batch was complete, JT came over to me with a little of it in a spoon. He blew it off for me to cool it off, I reluctantly leaned over, placed my mouth over the spoon and slowly sipped the chili. Temperature wise, the chili was still hot so that is what hit me first… then the peppers kicked in… and they literally kicked in. My chest felt like it was on fire and I started to scream. I honestly have never had a food that was that spicy hot… goodness gracious. JT was guaranteed for victory.
At the last minute, JT asked me if I could make him something creative for the event. I made a prescription label for the chili that called for the person to take one serving daily for a week. Call if more is needed. Caution (and I put this in red) do not take if you have the following symptoms: hypertension or pregnancy. This prescription contains four of the hottest peppers in the WORLD. Consult cook for advice. LOL… I even through the company’s logo on the top of the label with a prescription number and called it JT’s Hot (in red) & Spicy. The judge of the event later said JT would win on presentation alone. An hour and a half later, I could not take the anticipation any further, I called JT at work and immediately yelled, “Did you win?” JT calmly replied, “Yes babbee, I won.”
There was supposed to be a great deal of competition in the cook off but only one other person participated and she was no competition at all!! JT said her chili was watery, bland than a mug and she did not even supply bowls, spoons and crackers. How did she expect people were going to eat her watery chili? The judge sampled JT’s chili and thirty seconds later the peppers slapped him upside the face. He went to the back for fifteen minutes (probably drinking water nonstop), came back sampled the bland chili, then declared JT the winner!! JT won a prize (he will not tell me what it is…) and gets bragging rights at the job. He left the chili there so more people could eat it and when we picked up my crock pot later that evening and all of the chili was *gone*. Even yesterday (Sunday), people were still talking about his chili. I am proud of my cook… err babbee!! I luh you!!
