Pownce

Over the weekend BTocher kindly sent me an invitation to Pownce… not to be confused with pounce.

Like so many other social networks, I immediately jumped in the hype.

Now I am wondering if the hype is dying before it even got real good. Many are comparing the differences between Twitter and Pownce and it appears that the positive vibes for Twitter outweigh the ones for Pownce.

Right now my only personal concern is that the desktop software for Pownce is not working on my laptop. I am not certain why. The installation was smooth, but when I load the application, type in my login and password then hit Sign In, the bar moves and appears to load but nothing happens. Bummer. I would like to use this application on the go and I find it more convenient than keeping an open tab in Opera or Firefox (I already have over 30 tabs open).

Other than that, I quickly learned to turn off the email notifications for notes and replies. That got annoying very fast as my inbox flooded with links to the notes, not even the text of the actual note!

Pownce is in Alpha stage now. I hope Beta brings something more.

By the way, my Pownce page is: http://pownce.com/nexy/

Pownce desktop client That’s no problem on the invite, Nexy.

I can’t run the desktop client either. If I’m going to use Pownce much, I need a Firefox extension similar to Tweetbar or Twitbin. Is there any way I can shut off the email messages every time someone leaves a message on Pownce?

Baxter, yes to turn off the email messages go to: Settings, then on the left panel go to Notifications and uncheck whatever you would like. Right now, I only have Pending friend request checked. I was so happy to find out I could turn those off. It was becoming quite painful to get all of these links to messages in my inbox. *shudders*

Tweetbar and Twitbin… I did not know about those. I will have to check it out.

For Pownce, yes I hope that work out the kinks soon.

I’m just not impressed with Pownce at all.
The desktop client is buggy, working sometimes and not working at others.
You can’t embed it into your regular blog like you can with Twitter
You can’t customize it in any meaningful way, including with outbound links or sidebars.

I’m thinking they have a long way to go before it’s ready even for a beta.
