Dr. Who (Part I)

How was your Valentine’s Day? JT and I celebrate ours on Sunday evening while Mama and Dot watched the twins all day.

Yesterday, JT had to pick Keisha up from daycare early because her teacher suspected that she had a little stomach virus. I really did not agree but I did appreciate the concern. The only bad thing about when the children don’t go to daycare is that you still have to pay for the day. No prorate, no refund. You pay weekly at the beginning of the week and that is that. Keisha ended up sleeping a large portion of the day then later on she was fine for her afternoon and night bottle. If anything, she was exhausted from staying up until 11:30pm the previous night!!

I don’t have a good explanation for why I called this entry Dr. Who… I couldn’t think of anything else, and Dr. Who popped in my mind.

I originally wrote this entry last week and I kept adding and adding without even posting it. I will split the story into two parts. Here is part one and part two will be posted tomorrow:

Tuesday night, my motherly instincts were working overtime. This was the second night in a row that William was acting very lethargic, but this time around he didn’t have an appetite for his last bottle of the night and he was breathing erratically with a fast pulse. Yeah, I know I’m not a doctor but when those motherly instincts kick in you better respond. While talking to my mom, I mentally debated back and forth whether or not I wanted to call the medical exchange number. Mom said, maybe he is just having a dream? She asked how did I feel about the situation and I responded, while I’m not scared… but I am concerned. At the end of the call, I decided to call the medical exchange.

I called the exchange and as normal protocol, the operator took my name, my son’s name and his date of birth and the symptoms. Within thirty minutes, I received the call from Dr. Whatchamacallit (W. for short). I can never remember their names… for one they are usually some complicated last name and two; I’m more concerned about the possible diagnosis than the name. So, Dr. W. went through all of the symptoms with me and since William didn’t have a fever it didn’t call for us to go to the emergency room… but he did suggest that we come into the office the following morning.

After this call, I was very relieved that it was not an emergency situation. But since the William was still breathing fast, I remained concerned. I called JT before and after speaking to the doctor to keep him apprised of the situation, and then I called my mom to update her as well. That night, JT and I decided to keep William in the playpen in our bedroom instead of the nursery, in order to keep an eye on him. William woke up at approximately 12:30am with a wet diaper and an appetite. While changing his diaper, JT found a small circle of blood… it was not a distinct red, but rather light pink. One could still identify it as blood. Immediately, this added concern on top of what we were already feeling. All I could say is well… we will definitely bring this up with the doctor tomorrow.

Throughout the night, despite William still breathing fast, I maintained my sanity. I remained very calm. First thing in the morning, I called the doctor’s office so they could squeeze William in an appointment. We got an 8:45am appointment. At this point, I was 90% certain that nothing serious was wrong, but the pediatrician would answer all of my questions and hopefully bumped that up to 100%. As usual, JT and I were running late. Sometimes it feels like we have mastered getting two children and ourselves ready but other times we get distracted like watching news, playing around and other stuff… and these distractions get in the way which caused us to be late to the appointment. What happened between the distractions and arriving at the doctor’s office is a whole other topic that I won’t touch.

Since we were running late, JT dropped me off at the door. I grabbed William, all sixteen plus pounds of him and dashed off to Children’s Pediatrics. Thankfully, I didn’t get lost this time. The route to Children’s Pediatrics is this weird path that you have to go around and down just to go to an elevator far out of the way to go up one floor. This path was devastating to me when we first went there… the children were only one week old and I was completely sore from the surgery. JT carried both of the children in their car seats. I couldn’t even carry a six pounder because I didn’t even have enough strength to drag myself along.

Part II tomorrow folks. I promise.
